About the Mud + Gold Painting Workshop
In the Mud & Gold Paint Workshop you’ll be immersed in painting over 4 days. In this retreat workshop you'll have the time and space to explore your areas of interest and experiment with the exercises in order to find those that work for you. The goal is to discover a painting practice that delights you. Discover painting processes that resonate with your authentic self and fill you with excitement to get to work.
There is no specific outcome expected from you. You may move freely between abstraction and representation. Working on many surfaces and without preciousness, you’ll make decisions in the moment and learn to manage your internal critic. The goal is to introduce ideas on how to approach painting with a sense of liberation as well as sharing with you some unconventional painting approaches that bypass the overthinking left brain and allow for a looseness and ease to enter the process. By maintaining a balance between freedom and control, chance and intention we hope to expand the possibilities of what painting can be.
My aim as facilitator is to assist you in embracing and growing your unique sensibilities as an artist and to enable you to get unstuck and move forward in the painting process through simple prompts and exercises. Together to identify your ‘dots’ of interests and over the 4 days start to join the dots that represent the beginnings of a map of your artistic voice.
We’ll work in acrylic paint on many surfaces (paper & boards) and in series. You’ll have time to work on your own with me on hand when you need guidance. On Day 3 & 4 you may bring along any additional unfinished acrylic paintings & supports you might have that you’d like to resolve (or extra canvases/boards).
You’ll have time for just you and your creative adventure. You’ll be away from the discractions and responsibilites of daily life. This is an immersive working week with around 8 hours each day spent in the studio. We’ll work with focus with breaks for discussions and lunch. In the afternoons you’ll be able to squeeze in a nap, a walk and a swim in the dam.
I invite you to join me for an inspiring week of painting, connection, and creative discovery, set in the beautiful surroundings of Goedgedacht Farm in Riebeeck Kasteel.

"I have done three of your workshops and every time I come back eager and inspired to make more. Every time I have come back with something new. Every workshop has been a building block on the one before. Your beautiful organised studio space and your infectious creative guidance inspires me from one workshop to the next. I look forward to the next one and the next until I feel I am ready to move on."

"Thank you for the wonderful workshop you put together. I so enjoyed learning and exploring with your knowledgeable guidance. In addition to being a gifted artist you are an exceptional teacher.
I’ve always been hesitant to try abstract painting, and unsure how to start, but your thought provoking insights and prompts definitely gave me the impetus I needed. I loved every aspect of the workshop and the friendly camaraderie of the other attendees. All in all a worthwhile and enriching experience."

"Your course was an untold glory. I absolutely LOVED it! The frameworks you introduced us to were so liberating and are so much fun.. it was wonderful to feel so connected and yet so free. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for equipping me with a fresh and exhilarating new way to tap into a perspective that is deeply personal, yet without much of the angst that I previously battled with. Thank you thank you - -and I hope to see again very soon..."

"What a wonderful invest in myself your workshop was. I have been dancing around artistic expression my whole life and this is the first time I have actually painted. All I can wonder is what took me so long? Your workshop was gentle, considered, safe and so relatable. So many of the concepts were things buzzing around my head that have never even been vocalised. Your expert eye and artistic skill are almost secondary to the incredible explanation of the process. How to stay engaged when things are not going the way you imagined, how to look at accidents as gifts and how a lick of paint can be used to start again. I will be eternally grateful that I attended. I have painted every day since I finished and am even joining a local exhibition in a few months."
